Having been involved, all my life in some form of exercise, and all my adult life, in Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and other soft style martial arts, and having dabbled in yoga, Somatics and Pilates; I have accumulated a body of exercises and stretches that I find safe and effective for balancing stability and strength, as well as for relaxing and opening articulations. I offer private or group sessions for developing your own program depending on your needs. Sometimes when I do massage, I will also recommend certain exercises.
Tai Chi And Qi gong. I teach private or group fundamentals classes for Qi Gong (also called Chi Kung) and Tai Chi. I give a short description of what these two exercises are below. If you want to read more on the history or science of this great art, my two favorite practitioners sites are Andy Dale’s web site, wuji.com and Harvey Kurland’s facebook (Andy is in Seattle, Harvey is in Los Angeles) They have been my teachers, and are both living masters with life long experience.
The movement in these exercises are done in a relaxed manner, but not without concentration and intention. Tai Chi will make you use every muscle in your body, increasing balance, improving circulation and alertness, lowering blood pressure, and calming the mind. That is the short list of its benefits.
Chi, can best be described as life force. It is not actually the spiritual aspect (soul?) of our being, but what life uses, to keep each cell alive. Being aware of this life force can promote an attitude that is very sweet (compassionate and easy going), if one is generally a kind person.
Tai chi, is a series of movements that are connected, making it look like it is choreographed. Each move has martial art application, which it can be useful to know, mostly so the move is done correctly. Most people do tai chi for it’s health and happiness benefits. Qi Gong is easier to learn because there is less memorizing. It is much like Tai Chi but the moves aren’t connected and often the moves don’t have direct martial art application. The development of chi (Qi) does however, effects martial art application significantly.
There are possibly thousands of Qi Gong moves, and many different styles of both Tai Chi and Qi Gong. Particularly with Qi Gong, every school of martial art, world wide has some form of Qi (Chi, Ki, kundolini) exercises.
